Начать, пожалуй, надо с того, что коллекционеры — это совершенно особенный подвид геймеров. Большинство обычных игроков просто играет в игры. Коллекционеры же не столько в них играют, сколько собирают. Разумеется, речь идет не о цифровом архиве Steam, a о физических копиях: лицензионных картриджах и дисках, хотя иногда встречаются исключения в виде тематических подборок пиратских кариков на Денди из 90-х.
Любую коллекцию от простого собирательства отличает наличие системы, принципа. Например, можно фокусироваться на одной или нескольких платформах и постараться собрать фуллсет, то есть полный набор выходивших на консоль игр. Или сосредоточиться на определенном типе. Скажем, собирать только файтинги или коробочные версии для PC разных жанров. Дополнительным фильтром может стать регион выпуска. Можно приобретать только оригинальные японские издания, а можно обратить взор на американские и зачастую более редкие европейские релизы. У каждого коллекционера свои собственные критерии формирования коллекции, но какими бы они ни были, есть два момента, на который обращают внимание и комплект.

С комплектом все достаточно ясно. Он может быть либо полным, либо нет. Не хватает мануала, вкладыша с наклейками или (в запущенных случаях) регистрационной карточки? Все, комплект не полный, и коллекционер его не купит. С состоянием все куда сложнее. Как правило, чем дольше человек остается в теме, тем больше его начинает заботить состояние предметов. Паранойя на предмет царапин, загнутых уголков и прочих повреждений постоянно усиливается. Very good переходит в стремление к mint и like new, ну а терминальной стадией заболевания является приобретение и хранение фабрично запечатанных, нераспакованных игр. Я на собственном опыте прошел и успешно преодолел стадию собирания factory sealed дисков для первой PlayStation. Ощущения, будто слез с героиновой иглы: прекратить очень тяжело, остаешься без копейки в кармане и медленно убиваешь геймера внутри. Хотя на моих полках остались запечатанные издания, больше я их не приобретаю. Завязал. Текущее поколение это не касается, само собой.
Почему на factory sealed такой спрос? Ответ, на самом деле, на поверхности. Запаянные игры — это не про состояние или брезгливость от обладания б/у вещами. Как правило, это целиком и исключительно про редкость. Как и в других тематиках, среди игровых коллекционеров ценятся редкие вещи. В категорию редких обычно попадают крутые коллекционные издания (два-три поколения назад коллекционки делали нечасто), пресс-киты и промо материалы, доступ к которым был изначально ограничен, ну и factory sealed игры. Понятное дело, что с каждым годом количество таких копий становится все меньше. Считается, что тру-коллекционер никогда не станет вскрывать упаковку и будет вечно хранить свой экземпляр в темном чулане, но на самом деле это не так — игры распаковывают, и в результате предложение уменьшается. Да и редко кто покупает такие предметы для последующей перепродажи: даже не будучи вскрытыми, им суждено лежать в углу шкафа или в стеклянной витрине до тех пор, пока хозяину не надоест складировать это богатство.

Надоесть может по разным причинам. Бывает, что пропадает интерес к коллекционированию игр вообще или меняется парадигма — приоритет отдается другой системе, ненужное распродается, нужное докупается. Иногда нужны деньги на крупное приобретение, скажем, автомобиля. Известны случаи, когда от коллекции просила избавиться девушка или жена. Но как бы то ни было, цены на factory sealed только растут. Я купил ряд культовых игр на PS1 в середине нулевых, как PAL, так и обоих NTSC регионов. Также держу несколько запечатанных трешовых вещей в качестве доноров боксов для других тайтлов, которые могут повредиться при пересылке или находятся в не самой лучшей кондиции.

Как я писал в предыдущем посте, на всякое явление обязательно найдется организация, которая попытается его подмять под себя и начать регулировать. В данном случае это Video Game Authority, возникшее из ниоткуда на пустом месте. Ребята оценивают состояние запечатанных игр, помещают в плексигласовые коробки (повторно запечатывают запечатанное, ага) и лепят сверху стикер с градацией. Разумеется, не бесплатно. Владельцы выставляют полученные от VGA обратно игры на eBay, увеличивая прайс в 10 раз. Никакой ценности «оценка» от данной «ассоциации» не несет, поэтому я считаю идиотами всех людей, согласившихся переплатить кучу денег за бокс из оргстекла с голограммой. Впрочем, в США такие штуки публика обожает, и у конторы нет отбоя от клиентов.

Для многих стремление коллекционировать ретро видеоигры — попытка остановить или хотя бы замедлить течение времени, перенестись в детство, когда покупка каждого нового картриджа или диска была настоящим праздником. Элемент ностальгии по былым временам. Есть и другой тип людей, которым просто нравятся игры. Им нравится играть, интересны технологии, позволившие их создать, и история, стоящая за каждой них. Для обеих категорий factory sealed является наивысшим проявлением желания собирать игры. Как непогашенные марки или монеты ограниченной чеканки. Дорогое удовольствие, ценность которого понятна только фанатичным приверженцам данного хобби.
